Hi Guys .... i am no computer wizz kid, i only play the games etc need a bit of advice/help

Recently my gfx card has been playing up (i think) its gone down to 72fps on cs when it shud be 100 ..... and on C&C generals if i play a skirmish it will start to go a bit slugish if u have 2 or more computers on hard. It has never done this before, maybe some of u clever ppl in this field know an awful lot more than me!

Cheers, Reef

Getting back to Reef's problem -

It might be because your running out/or havn't set the page file memory high enough, to tweak it, Go to Start -> Control Panel -> System, then click on the "Advanced" tab, then click "Settings" under the "Performance" title, finally click on the 2nd "Advanced" tab which comes up.

You should 2 Selection thingys, the "Programs" option should be selected on both of them, if they are not, then do it.

At the bottom there should be a "Vertual Memory" title, it should be displaying how much Virtual Memory you have allocated to the page file under it, click on "Change" and I would recommend you should set at least 700mb - 1gb as the maximum, after all this, restart your comp. and everything should smoother...

If this doesn't achieve anything, I reccomend you Defragment your Hard-Drive(s). You can do this by going to Start -> Accessories -> System Tools -> Disk Defragmenter. I must warn you though, it does take fucking ages to complete (depending on the size of your Hard-Drive(s)) so you should start it before you go to sleep then it should be completed in the morning.

Glad to help, if it STILL doesn't work, chat to me on MSN (my addy. is x@hotmail.com)

try getting the latest drivers for your card.

have you installed any new drivers or reverted back to any old seting recently?

ALso some other games/apps might have chaged some shared files which could be effecting the performance of other things.

Has the slow down been in just a few games or everything?

reef...dont adjust the virtual memory setting as rane suggested, XP does a fine job of that itself. It used to be worth tweaking in win98, but its BS now tbh....should only ever be 1.5 times the amount of ram you have installed. Defrag is a good idea tho, if u havent already.

but he has a radeon 9700 (possibly0 so that is adequate enough

defrag, fresh driver install and possibly check what processes are running that might use the gfx card in any form before playing games (and in general) or whatever would be a good thing to check!

Maybe it was that defrag you ran, you might had LOADS of misplaced/moved files, so when the defrag moved them all back to place, it might take a little bit of time for the system to recognise the new locations...

I defraged my HD about a week ago too, my CS was a bit jerky when people sent radio messages & etc. After a couple of times playing it, it all went back to normal...

Also, another thing that could be effecting it, is AntiVirus software. For example, Symantec LiveUpdate, it usually updates it self without telling you, so make sure its disabled before you start your game(s).

Other than that, just make sure (like Bren said) that all processes are working correctly & if theres anything out of the ordinary, give me a shout & I'll tell if it supposed to be there or not...

BTW...defragging doesnt only move files, it rebuilds a kind of index...so Rane, it shouldnt need to find the new locations...thats the whole point of a defrag.

You got me wrong Ras, what I meant was that the system before the defrag was used to where the files were and how they were indexed, but then when Reef defragged his computer, and ran all his programs/games again, they needed to get used to the defragged location & indexing form.

Ssh, you ruining my moment of fame...

Reef, if you still havn't sorted out your problem, here's a couple more tips that might/might not help you out -

Disk Cleanup... This is a bit like defrag, but it doesn't take as long. What it basically does is find all the shite/temporary shite on your computer & gets rid of it. It doesn't exactly free up gigs of space, but it does help to run it every so often.

To run it go to, Start -> Accessories -> System Tools -> Disk Cleanup

When you first open it, it checks what you have on your hard-drive(s). When its done (which doesn't take very long) it'll ask you what you want to get rid of, check what you want, and let it do its work...

In an extreme case (which I doubt this is), you might want to completely format your hard-drive(s). I'm guessing you already know how to, so I'm not going to go through it (mainly because I can't be arsed ). But I seriously doubt you will have to just because your not getting your max. FPS on Counter-Strike.

One thing though, if you ever want/need to format your hard-drive(s). I reccommend that you format it/them using the NTFS file system. You'll get the choice to either use the FAT32 or NTFS files systems, I'd say to use the NTFS file system because your a gamer and you run power-hungry programs (games, editing software etc. etc.)

I'm not a 100% sure what the difference is between FAT32 & NTFS, but I think its the way the information is arranged and threaded. And the NTFS system is more effective for games & etc.
